Can my dog eat contraceptive pills?

No.

A pill or two is rarely dangerous, but a whole strip in a small dog, or HRT tablets, can damage the bone marrow — call your vet.

Already ate it?

If they ate itA pill or two: watch at home. A whole strip, HRT tablets, or a small dog: call your vet straight away, even though nothing will look wrong yet — they may want blood tests over the next two weeks.
Watch forUsually nothing at first. After a big dose: pale gums, bruising or tiny red spots, nosebleeds, fever or infections over one to three weeks. Unspayed females may come into heat.

Thinking of giving it?

Why not even a littleBone-marrow damage is reported from about 1 mg of oestrogen per kg. A typical pill holds 0.02–0.035 mg, so a pill or two is rarely a problem; HRT tablets carry far more.
WhyBirth control pills hold very little oestrogen, so a dog has to eat a lot for it to matter. HRT tablets hold much more, and with them the damage shows one to two weeks later.
