Can my dog eat peanut butter?
A little.
Only plain peanut butter with no xylitol — check the label every time. A teaspoon is fine; xylitol (also called birch sugar) is lethal to dogs.
Thinking of giving it?
How much is fineA teaspoon. Unsalted, unsweetened, and xylitol-free — read the label every time you change brand.
WhyXylitol causes a rapid, dangerous drop in blood sugar and can damage the liver. Otherwise peanut butter is a useful high-value treat, but fatty.
Already ate it?
If they ate itLabel says xylitol, birch sugar or 'sugar-free': go to a vet now, even if they seem fine. Don't make them vomit unless a vet tells you to. Plain peanut butter: nothing to do beyond a possible loose stool.
Watch forAfter xylitol: vomiting, weakness, wobbling, collapse or seizures within 10–60 minutes; liver damage can follow in 12–24 hours.
